Change the world - teach

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela

A career in teaching and education is one of the most challenging and rewarding roles. What other job gives you the opportunity to inspire and shape the lives of hundreds of people? Many teachers feel good about their work because they are doing something worthwhile that makes a difference.

You will like teaching if you are a looking for variety, enjoy a level of autonomy and want a challenge. Many of the communication and people skills that make a good teacher are valuable skills that can be applied in many other jobs too. Unlike most careers, teaching can be adjusted to suit your own lifestyle.

Teaching roles vary from early childhood, through to senior high school, college and university lecturers and tutors, special needs teachers, specialist subject teachers, corporate trainers to curriculum development and school management. There are increasing opportunities to work overseas in countries like the United Kingdom, US, Canada and New Zealand where there are a shortage of teachers. Many people also find employment around the world teaching English as a second language.

To qualify as a teacher you usually need to complete either a specialist education degree or a degree in any area and then a diploma of certificate of education. Each country sets different standards and requirements.

Teaching is often dismissed as a career option because, having been taught at school, we think we know what being a teacher is but teaching is a valuable career that provides immense job satisfaction.
